You really shouldn’t visit New York without trying to catch a Sherry Vine show. More than a drag show, Sherry musical talent and writing put her at the top of the entertainment food chain. Sadly, it’s going to get tougher to see her perform with her upcoming stint in Los Angeles so when we saw she was playing alongside the legendary Joey Arias we grabbed front row seats and sat back for an evening of glitter dusted gold. The evening was a cabaret-style show mixing comedy, music and general debauchery into a campy romp through the wacky mind of two of New York’s most revered queens. But what makes this night so talent is both Joey and Sherry write their own material which is as smart as it is funny. The magic between the two divas transforms ordinary banter into a masterful long-form improv that kept the show moving at a fast clip.
Sherry is perhaps best known for her wacky and often outrageous music video parodies, TV and film appearances but it’s her clear devotion to acting that has led her to producing her own successful productions that have taken her from to Alaska to Australia and everything in-between. Voted Entertainer of the Year by her peers, she’s been honoured with a Glammy Award as well as HX Drag Queen of the Year.
Performance artist, cabaret singer, drag artist, published author, comedian, stage persona and cult-movie star, Joey Arias film credits include Flawless; To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar; and Wigstock: The Movie but it’s her smooth, golden voice that had the room hypnotized while she sang her own music with a few Billie Holiday numbers thrown in, adding to the elegant experience. Watching Joey on stage is like being transported into an old black and white film where everybody is fabulous, glamorous and carefree. Just like Joey and Sherry’s stage presence.
