Just 439 steps from our apartment is Union Square Theatre which is running 39 Steps directed by Maria Aitken and starring Billy Carter, Robert Petkoff, Cameron Pow and Brittany Vicars.
The set and lighting get increasingly playful and creative and as the show progresses and the choreographed acting was really, really funny and unique. There were at least six clever references to other Hitchcock titles and even if you’re too young to know who Alfred is you’ll still get a few chuckles out of this interpretation. Our audience ranged from teenagers with their families to same-sex couples in their golden years and while everyone seemed to find something funny and lean-forward-worthy the show was less engaging because the actors were projecting (read: straining) their voices which worked for a few characters (some of the time) but the overall effect of actors shouting is exhausting, instead of engaging. Despite this, you’ll likely find 39 Steps to be a smart and funny adaptation especially when you consider that this production has over one hundred and fifty characters being played by only four cast members, phew!
