A light and funny romp through a distorted family’s view on business, sex and sausage making. Proclaiming to be the new ‘Latino gay cisgender glam sex farce’, the Garcias are a wacky Cuban family (think Addams family meets the Kardashians) who operate a successful sausage business as a cover for their real business, an escort service. If you need a reason to see this play, here are two: Dolores and Pepito Garcia who are larger than life and steal the show. Mario Bosquez plays a wickedly funny and somewhat overbearing Dolores Garcia while Pepito Garcia, played by Antonio Minino, is high camp in his role as a gay priest and son to Dolores. Watching this play reminded me that theatre is often unnecessarily uptight and serious and that’s certainly not this show, I could feel the actors loving their role and having fun in the process.
On the downsideI got the sense that you had to know the characters from their previous productions which I didn’t see and so many of the jokes fell flat. There was also a lot of thick accents and lispy dialogue which was (at times) difficult to understand. The Powerpoint presentation that played throughout the show didn’t add any value to the storyline and was distracting to say the least: low rez memes of big boobs, butts and sausages cheapened the story instead off modernizing it but they managed to get a few laughs out of it.
